[Six months on duty isn't a terribly long time working as a police officer, but Judy had cracked tougher cases on her first three days than most officers got through in years throughout their career. They also couldn't say they had partners working with them like she did...and though Nick had been with her for only a short time, they'd been covering quite a bit of ground. It wasn't limited to the missing mammal case that broke her career, either: illegal drag racing, armed robbery, kidnappings...they'd seen it all.
Except...for what Bogo assigned them to today.]
We've got a 10-30 Hit and Run.
[Judy explains as she passes the case file over to Nick in the passenger seat, cautiously steering their police cruiser around the next block, knowing that the crime scene is only a short ways from here in the center of Savannah Square. All of the roads had been blocked off, making the street seem hauntingly desolate.]
Victim of the assault: Mister Oswald Possum. Cause of death: ...Roadkill.
[She shudders, her grip on the wheel shifting as they start to approach a sea of traffic cones and police tape.]
Apparently he'd been left on the road for two days...nobody realized he wasn't, you know. Playing dead.
[Thankfully the body isn't here anymore. Their job is to take stock of the autopsy and scour the scene to see if they can get any clues as to where their runner might have gone.]

Date: 2017-01-14 03:18 am (UTC)...though, there were, of course, things he didn't enjoy so much while being on the force. And that would be the more... grisly of the cases they're assigned. And today, it seems, that they've been given the grisliest of them all so far, and Nick can't hide the way his nose scrunches up as he takes the files from Judy and starts to look them over.]
Well, possums are known to exaggerate...
[He flips through the autopsy, grimacing at the images attached to the file.]
Eugh, but you'd think the tire marks would tip someone off sooner.

Date: 2017-01-14 03:26 am (UTC)[It's upsetting, but that's the way with possums. You can't really move one that's fainted away, not unless you want to get your hand bitten. Then there were liabilities or animals who just flat out didn't care...too busy to stop long enough to check if that was a fainted possum or a dead one.]
Oh! There!
[The car suddenly comes to a screeching halt as Judy slams on the breaks (she didn't need to, but she got excited), both of them sent jerking forward against their seatbelts. Up ahead, some detectives are canvassing the scene, placing numbered markers near bits of evidence. In the center of it all is a chalk drawing in the shape of Mr. O'Possum...and it sure does look like he's seen better days.
Judy shuts off the engine and quickly hops to the ground, pulling out her pen and a notebook as she goes.]
C'mon Nick, this case isn't solving itself!
ITS BECAUSE WE HAVENT KEYWORDED THEM YET
Date: 2017-01-14 03:40 am (UTC)[Nick is sent jerking forward as Judy slams on the brakes, the files go flying out of his lap and onto the floor of the car but by the time he's pushing himself back against the seat; she's already unbuckled and out of the car.
So he quickly scrambles to unbuckle and shuffle all of the papers together again before hopping out of the car himself and joining Judy up ahead.]
Easy on the brakes there Carrots, you nearly made me roadkill.
[Nick pulls the files up in his hands, and starts to put them back in order for convenience as they step onto the scene.]
KEYWORDS ARE FOR SQUARES
Date: 2017-01-14 03:50 am (UTC)[Judy grins back at him over her shoulder before turning her attention back to the road, and...well, it's not hard to tell where the body was. There's a smear....on the road, right through where the chalk outline is.
She grimaces, taking a nice step back to make sure she's not running the risk of stepping on- or in- anything before flipping to a blank page of her notebook.]
Alright, if Mister O'Possum had been here for two days before anyone reported him missing, that means our perp could be anywhere in Zootopia right now. And there were no witnesses...
[She taps her pen against her chin, eyeing the road to try to decide what to investigate first. Really, she's just musing aloud.]
No real signs of foul play have been discovered yet, but I don't think we can rule anything out until we have more evidence. What do you think, Nick?
THEY ARE
Date: 2017-01-14 04:19 am (UTC)I think this is going to be a long, long day.
[Nick says this as he flips the files back over to the autopsy, where the images of his body are attached. Just a poor possum ran over flat... it's hard to stomach but unfortunately, things like this happen more often than people like to admit. But usually the one who hit don't typically run unless it was on purpose, or they were a coward. Their killer is definitely one of those two.]
If we're looking at foul play then we're looking at a motive, and what kind of motive would someone have to kill a little possum?
no subject
Date: 2017-01-14 04:31 am (UTC)The same kind of motive that would make someone frame predators. So, in a word, almost anything.
[Lest we forget, species does not automatically equal innocent.]
Now if I were Oswald...I would be crossing the road...here.
[She stands on the sidewalk, looking up at the blinking crosswalk sign.]
Wait for my turn...then walk. Maybe he was distracted...or jaywalking.
[She traces the ghost of the possum's footsteps, looking all around as she goes.]
I'd have walked right here, and then... [She points with her pen at the corner they just came around.] ...a vehicle would have come through this intersection, right there. No traffic cameras here, but there's...the bank!
[Judy's ears perk as she gestures to the building on the very same block, pointing once more with her pen.]
There. After we look through here we need to speak to the bank workers and ask to review their security footage. We just might have caught a murder on camera.

Date: 2017-01-14 04:39 am (UTC)[The fox comes up behind Judy, and he tucks the files away under his arm for the time being as he talks through his theory.]
Ozzy here could've not looked where he was walking, crossed when the light turned green and bam! Someone too busy or too scared to check just kept driving and didn't look back.
[It's easy to miss the smaller creatures of Zootopia, especially if you're driving a taller car...]
Better hit up that camera though, it ain't half bad of an idea. Where the traffic cameras couldn't catch, the bank's probably got it covered.

Date: 2017-01-14 04:45 am (UTC)[Judy jots down a few things in her notebook, one foot tapping against the asphalt.]
From these tire marks, it looks like whoever did this might have tried to stop. You wouldn't have stopped if you wanted to run somebody over, would you?
[C'mon Nick, you're the ex-criminal here]
no subject
Date: 2017-01-14 04:52 am (UTC)If he were a serial hit-and-runner, anyway.]
Nnnnnno, you wouldn't. Not unless you wanted to gain some extra style points by making some really nice looking skid marks.
[He's obviously joking here because honestly, no one would do that in the first place.]
But I can't imagine someone wanting to waste the time hitting the brakes if it were intentional. If I were them, I'd want to get out of there as quick as possible.

Date: 2017-01-14 04:57 am (UTC)And by the look of the direction of these, they went this way.
[She looks down the street, making a mental note to remember that road leads on to the Rainforest District.]
We'll have to check the cameras to be sure, assuming we even got any valuable footage...I don't think we'll be able to trace a car all the way to wherever it went, but we might be able to get its licence plate.
[With a hard stroke of her pen and a quick dog ear of the page, Judy flips to a clean one and bends down to look at the marked bits of evidence that hadn't been collected yet.]
Now, let's see if anything got left behind...
no subject
Date: 2017-01-15 12:35 am (UTC)He smirks at her though, and nudges her lightly with his elbow.]
Now don't sell yourself too short there Hopps! Who tracked those Timberwolves from Tajunga to Cliffside?
[They probably could track that person's car to where it went, but also... tracking the license plate would be far quicker and easier.
He curiously crouches down though to also take a good look at the evidence presented towards them, and he scrunches up his nose from the smell of where the possum's body used to be still lingering around the area.]
Pee-yew! I mean, I know someone died over here but the forensic team could stand to clean the scene up a little better!
no subject
Date: 2017-01-15 01:00 am (UTC)I meant we can't because there might not be traffic cameras all the way to wherever our hit-and-runner went.
[She returns her attention to the asphalt, giving the blood stain a cursory glance. There are tire marks immediately before and after, showing that somebody had slammed on the breaks before impact. There are some small chunks of rubber on the road as well from where the driver tore up their tires skidding them like that.
Her expression becomes a little sympathetic as she uses the point of her pen to turn over a clump of white fur.]
With the projected force of impact here, I'm surprised our victim didn't end up on the sidewalk. This person must have been flying through this intersection.

Date: 2017-01-15 04:41 am (UTC)[That or someone who just likes to drive fast.. now, after seeing a sloth drive 100-miles per hour Nick doesn't want to stereotype or anything.. but there are a few animals out there known to live life on the fast side....
Nick straightens up a little as he walks over to the chalk outlines, and he sets the files down so he can pinch his nose with one hand as he bends over to get a closer look at the lines. They're outlined as if the possum was facing the opposite side of the sidewalk.. so sideways across the road, not facing towards or away from on-coming traffic.]
Looks like Ozzy here tried to run... he should've been quick enough if the driver pressed on his brakes sooner so I think we can safely say he saw the possum at the last second. Busy swiping left on Timber?
no subject
Date: 2017-01-15 04:52 am (UTC)Probably never made it to work, or wherever they were headed. You can't really explain to your boss that you were late because you hit a possum.
[Not in this world you can't.]
It's a shame we have no witnesses...it's strange, you'd think a crosswalk like this would have been full of animals during that...
[Judy blinks, one of her ears swiveling on its own accord as he realizes something.]
We don't know what time this happened. The body was here for two days, but if nobody reported him missing...it could have happened at night for all we know!
no subject
Date: 2017-01-15 06:30 pm (UTC)We better hope those cameras have good night vision then, otherwise it's going to be near impossible to find that license plate number and that's kind of the best shot we've got here. Unless you wanna look through all the tires in Zootopia and try to find ones that match Possum's new shirt pattern?
[There's a small pause as he considers that option, which would.. take them a lot longer than he'd ever wish to spend on a single case.]
...actually, forget I suggested that.
no subject
Date: 2017-01-15 06:40 pm (UTC)No...but I think the evidence would be pretty damning if we manage to find the car and the treads do match. There would be no contesting it then.
[She clicks her pen and deftly puts it back into her pocket, snapping her notebook shut.]
It's a long shot. But when has dumb luck not been on our side before, right?
no subject
Date: 2017-01-15 07:20 pm (UTC)That's true. If there's anything that you've got, it's dumb luck Carrots. And you've got a ton of it.
[He says this in jest, of course. But it's also not wrong. She's... been incredibly lucky in situations where luck seemed like it'd be nonexistent.]
Speaking of dumb, we should head over to the bank before it closes. The pigs that run the place wouldn't be too keen on us cutting into their valuable time off the clock.
no subject
Date: 2017-01-15 07:42 pm (UTC)Let's hurry then. Officers, we are done here. Finish up with your duties and we will be reporting back to Chief Bogo the moment we find out more.
[The other officers nod in Judy's direction as they start to wrap it up while Judy starts running towards the Bank.]
C'mon Nick!
