[Six months on duty isn't a terribly long time working as a police officer, but Judy had cracked tougher cases on her first three days than most officers got through in years throughout their career. They also couldn't say they had partners working with them like she did...and though Nick had been with her for only a short time, they'd been covering quite a bit of ground. It wasn't limited to the missing mammal case that broke her career, either: illegal drag racing, armed robbery, kidnappings...they'd seen it all.
Except...for what Bogo assigned them to today.]
We've got a 10-30 Hit and Run.
[Judy explains as she passes the case file over to Nick in the passenger seat, cautiously steering their police cruiser around the next block, knowing that the crime scene is only a short ways from here in the center of Savannah Square. All of the roads had been blocked off, making the street seem hauntingly desolate.]
Victim of the assault: Mister Oswald Possum. Cause of death: ...Roadkill.
[She shudders, her grip on the wheel shifting as they start to approach a sea of traffic cones and police tape.]
Apparently he'd been left on the road for two days...nobody realized he wasn't, you know. Playing dead.
[Thankfully the body isn't here anymore. Their job is to take stock of the autopsy and scour the scene to see if they can get any clues as to where their runner might have gone.]

Now don't sell yourself too short there Hopps! Who tracked those Timberwolves from Tajunga to Cliffside?
[They probably could track that person's car to where it went, but also... tracking the license plate would be far quicker and easier.
He curiously crouches down though to also take a good look at the evidence presented towards them, and he scrunches up his nose from the smell of where the possum's body used to be still lingering around the area.]
Pee-yew! I mean, I know someone died over here but the forensic team could stand to clean the scene up a little better!

Date: 2017-01-15 01:00 am (UTC)I meant we can't because there might not be traffic cameras all the way to wherever our hit-and-runner went.
[She returns her attention to the asphalt, giving the blood stain a cursory glance. There are tire marks immediately before and after, showing that somebody had slammed on the breaks before impact. There are some small chunks of rubber on the road as well from where the driver tore up their tires skidding them like that.
Her expression becomes a little sympathetic as she uses the point of her pen to turn over a clump of white fur.]
With the projected force of impact here, I'm surprised our victim didn't end up on the sidewalk. This person must have been flying through this intersection.

Nick straightens up a little as he walks over to the chalk outlines, and he sets the files down so he can pinch his nose with one hand as he bends over to get a closer look at the lines. They're outlined as if the possum was facing the opposite side of the sidewalk.. so sideways across the road, not facing towards or away from on-coming traffic.]
Looks like Ozzy here tried to run... he should've been quick enough if the driver pressed on his brakes sooner so I think we can safely say he saw the possum at the last second. Busy swiping left on Timber?

Date: 2017-01-15 04:52 am (UTC)Probably never made it to work, or wherever they were headed. You can't really explain to your boss that you were late because you hit a possum.
[Not in this world you can't.]
It's a shame we have no witnesses...it's strange, you'd think a crosswalk like this would have been full of animals during that...
[Judy blinks, one of her ears swiveling on its own accord as he realizes something.]
We don't know what time this happened. The body was here for two days, but if nobody reported him missing...it could have happened at night for all we know!

Date: 2017-01-15 06:30 pm (UTC)We better hope those cameras have good night vision then, otherwise it's going to be near impossible to find that license plate number and that's kind of the best shot we've got here. Unless you wanna look through all the tires in Zootopia and try to find ones that match Possum's new shirt pattern?
[There's a small pause as he considers that option, which would.. take them a lot longer than he'd ever wish to spend on a single case.]
...actually, forget I suggested that.

Date: 2017-01-15 06:40 pm (UTC)No...but I think the evidence would be pretty damning if we manage to find the car and the treads do match. There would be no contesting it then.
[She clicks her pen and deftly puts it back into her pocket, snapping her notebook shut.]
It's a long shot. But when has dumb luck not been on our side before, right?

Date: 2017-01-15 07:20 pm (UTC)That's true. If there's anything that you've got, it's dumb luck Carrots. And you've got a ton of it.
[He says this in jest, of course. But it's also not wrong. She's... been incredibly lucky in situations where luck seemed like it'd be nonexistent.]
Speaking of dumb, we should head over to the bank before it closes. The pigs that run the place wouldn't be too keen on us cutting into their valuable time off the clock.

Date: 2017-01-15 07:42 pm (UTC)Let's hurry then. Officers, we are done here. Finish up with your duties and we will be reporting back to Chief Bogo the moment we find out more.
[The other officers nod in Judy's direction as they start to wrap it up while Judy starts running towards the Bank.]
C'mon Nick!
